Custom AI

How much does custom AI development cost in Canada, and how long does it take?

By Ed Svrini, CTO, ITACC · · 4 min read

Key takeaways

  • Small AI integrations (for example an assistant connected to one system) are commonly quoted at CA$8,000–$65,000 and 4–8 weeks.
  • Medium custom builds are commonly quoted at CA$65,000–$275,000 and 3–6 months.
  • Published hourly rates for AI developers in Toronto run about CA$90–$180.
  • Budget for running costs too: published estimates for small integrations range from CA$50 to CA$2,000 a month.
  • A proof of concept in 4–8 weeks is the cheapest way to find out whether a bigger build is worth it.

Short answer: published 2026 estimates for custom AI development in Canada run from about CA$8,000–$65,000 for a small integration built in 4–8 weeks, to CA$65,000–$275,000 for a medium build over 3–6 months, and CA$1 million or more for enterprise systems that take a year or longer. Most of the spread comes from scope, data readiness and how many systems the AI must connect to.

This guide puts the published Canadian numbers side by side, so you can set a realistic budget before you talk to a custom AI development company. For what drives the price and how the process works, see our custom AI development guide.

Published cost ranges for custom AI in Canada (2026)

Different firms slice the market differently, but the ranges overlap. Here are two Canadian-dollar breakdowns published in 2026 by Databending and Apptunix. Both firms sell these services, so treat the numbers as published estimates, not quotes.

Project typePublished cost (CAD)Published timelineSource
Small integration (API-based assistant, simple automation)$8,000–$65,0004–8 weeksDatabending
Medium build (custom pipelines, several integrations)$65,000–$275,0003–6 monthsDatabending
Enterprise AI$1,000,000+12+ monthsDatabending
AI chatbot$25,000–$60,000+2–4 monthsApptunix
Generative AI app$60,000–$160,000+4–8 monthsApptunix
Machine learning software$80,000–$200,000+5–9 monthsApptunix
Computer vision software$100,000–$300,000+6–10 monthsApptunix

Smaller, tightly scoped projects can come in lower. SyncSpark publishes a discovery phase of roughly CA$2,000–$5,000 and a build of CA$15,000–$40,000 for a small to mid-size business. Treat every range here as a starting point for a conversation.

What you pay per hour, and what in-house costs

Agency and contractor rates. Apptunix lists AI developer rates in Toronto at CA$90–$180 an hour, and Databending lists Canadian contractor rates of CA$85–$275+ an hour, depending on seniority and specialty.

Hiring in-house. PayScale reports an average base salary of about C$100,000 for a machine learning engineer in Toronto (10th–90th percentile: C$82,000–$144,000, updated April 2026). Morgan McKinley's 2026 salary guide puts the Toronto range at $100,000–$180,000 with a median of $150,000. Those are base salaries before benefits, tools, cloud costs and the time it takes to hire. For a first project, many businesses find it cheaper to work with a partner and hire once the AI is proven.

How long does custom AI development take?

A typical timeline, based on published project-type totals from SPD Technology:

StageTypical length
Proof of concept4–8 weeks
LLM integration or RAG assistant4–8 weeks
AI feature added to an existing product6–10 weeks
AI / ML minimum viable product2–4 months
Fine-tuned foundation model2–5 months
Production AI platform6–12 months

Within an MVP, the same source breaks the work into phases: discovery and scoping (1–2 weeks), data assessment (1–3 weeks), data preparation (2–6 weeks), model development (2–4 weeks), evaluation (1–2 weeks), integration and deployment (2–4 weeks) and monitoring setup (1–2 weeks). Data preparation is often the longest single phase, so if your documents or records are scattered or messy, expect the project to take longer than the low end.

What makes a project cost more (or less)

  • Data readiness. Clean, accessible data shortens the schedule. Databending's published estimates for data work alone range from CA$5,000 to over CA$150,000.
  • Number of integrations. Every system the AI reads from or writes to (CRM, ERP, inbox, document store) adds design and testing time.
  • Accuracy and risk. A tool drafting internal notes needs less testing than one answering customers or touching money.
  • Privacy and compliance. Databending lists legal review at CA$5,000–$25,000 and privacy impact assessments at CA$10,000–$50,000 for projects that need them.
  • Build vs buy. Using an existing model through an API is usually far cheaper than training your own. Databending puts custom fine-tuned models at CA$60,000–$250,000. Our guide to RAG vs fine-tuning explains the difference.

Don't forget running costs

Custom AI is not a one-time purchase. Plan for model usage fees, hosting, monitoring and updates. Databending's published monthly ranges are CA$50–$2,000 for small integrations and CA$1,000–$12,000 for medium builds. Many pilots stall because nobody budgeted for this stage; we cover the other reasons in why AI pilots stall before production.

Canadian programs that can lower the cost

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

  • SR&ED tax credits. If your project involves real technical uncertainty, it may qualify for Scientific Research and Experimental Development credits. The Canada Revenue Agency says Canadian-controlled private corporations can earn an enhanced 35% investment tax credit on up to $6 million of qualifying expenditures, for tax years beginning after December 15, 2024. Routine integration work usually does not qualify, so talk to your accountant.
  • NRC IRAP. The National Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance Program funds innovative small and mid-size businesses, including some AI projects. Programs change often, so check with an IRAP advisor about what is open.

How to get a reliable estimate

  1. Write down the one task or decision you want AI to help with, and how you will measure success.
  2. List the systems and data it needs.
  3. Ask for a fixed-scope discovery or proof of concept before committing to a full build.
  4. Ask every custom AI development company you talk to for a written scope, a timeline by phase, and a monthly running-cost estimate.
